Balderdash

When I visited my cousins in Hanoi earlier this year, they introduced me (because at the moment, the clan thinks [ria=talecraft] ) to a game called "Balderdash". Of course, my first reaction was "Ah, man! I'm on vacation!" But it was actually quite fun.

Balderdash: Webster's dictionary defines it as senseless jargon, or nonsense.

Balderdash, the game: The card-picker picks a card with a word that seems to be balderdash (but is actually not). The participants are supposed to write their own definition for it. Then the card-picker reads out all the definitions, including the correct one, and the participants vote which they think is the correct definition. If you choose right, you get 2 points. But you get 1 point for each time the other participants choose your definition.

And if the words were funny, the definitions were hillarious!

Take one example. The word was "Extispicy." The definitions that came up were "an advertising campaign for a Mexican Burrito," and some other meanings that involved jalapeños and chilis. But the real definition of the word was divining the future using animal organs struck by lightning. Who would have thought that was what Extispicy meant?

Another word we picked was "Schwankfelder", and everyone chose "the Swedish name of Kermit the Frog" as the the answer, when in fact, Schwankfelders were those who practiced the religion of the Church of Schwankfeld.

The new version of the game, "Absolute Balderdash," also includes movies, dates, names, and acronyms aside from the original uncommon words. Try imagining what the movie "We've never been licked" is all about (I assure you, it's not what you think. And no, there are no lollipops).
